Meet Dr. Buzbee
Your Board-Certified Optometrist
Dr. Michael Buzbee is no stranger to hard work as he grew up just outside Waco, Texas working on several family farms, auto wrecking yards, and insurance salvage businesses. He graduated High School as the Highest Ranking Male student and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston Central Campus and the Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry. Dr. Buzbee performed a clinical externship at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth. He graduated Summa Cum Laude as a Phi Beta Kappa Honor’s Graduate and as the youngest American student in his optometry class.
Practicing for Over 35 Years
Dr. Buzbee began his optometric career in Odessa working with Dr. Leslie Cook in 1982. In 1984, he bought a building at 2102 N. Grandview in Odessa and opened his professional practice. In the early 1980’s, Dr. Buzbee co-authored the by-laws and was instrumental in establishing the Paraoptometric Section of the Texas Optometric Society. In 1991, Dr. Buzbee was in the very first group of Texas optometrists to pass continuing educational credentials from the University of Houston College of Optometry’s Therapeutic Optometry licensing prerequisite and to pass the National TMOD exam to be licensed as a therapeutic optometrist. In 1998, Dr. Buzbee was also in the first group to pass the stringent clinical and academic testing to become licensed as an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist. This level of licensure greatly increases the ability for an optometrist to treat eye diseases. In 2013 Dr. Buzbee passed the credentialing and testing required to be board certified by the American Board of Optometry.
Committed to Continuing Education
In 2018, Dr. Buzbee continues to maintain education and testing is the only board-certified optometrist in Odessa. He has contributed vision services to several local Lion’s Clubs, was a participating member of Vision U.S.A., provided free eye care for the working poor and is a past president of the West Texas Optometric Society branch of the Texas Optometric Society. He has a been a member of the Texas Optometric Society and the American Optometric Association for over 36 years. His interests and hobbies include, computer science and computer programming, science and technology, smart home automation, alternate energy and singing karaoke. Dr. Buzbee is married to Karen, has two children and is a loving grandfather.
